Ljubljana, Slovenia…this was a quick stopover for me on my way to Croatia. I heard it was a nice, charming town with lots of cafes and a castle. So off I went for day. After a 6 hour train, I arrived in the intense heat and found the cutest little hostel – up 3 flights of stairs, but I`m getting more used to the stairs with my bag – sort of.
I decided to check out the city and walked along the canals, did some window shopping as everything was closed on Sunday, and then took the brand new funicular to the top of the castle. It did not feel like a castle to me as everything was so modern and new, but it was a nice view of the city. I had to check out Dragon Bridge as I love dragons and it was kinda cool.
The other highlight for the town is the pink cathedral and it was really pink.
At this point, I went back for a nap and planned to go out that night for dinner and drinks with a Irish couple I met, but when I awoke from my nap and was ready to head out, a huge gust of wind hit our hostel and it started to pour rain so hard it was a massive storm. The building was shaking, and howling. Crazy as it came out of now where! The TV signal went out and there was no leaving for a while.
A couple hours later (and after we finished watching the movie Serendipity with subtitles), it stopped and we saw fire trucks and police out in front of our hostel and the Irish couple and I went to see what the aftermath was. Ends up an entire row of scaffolding from across the street had been blown down and it came crashing into a couple stores and made a huge mess on the street. Luckily it didn`t look like anyone was hurt and the crews were already cleaning it up.
Next morning, just a casual stroll around town and I was a local – stopped one place for a latte, another for the best salad I have had in a long time and I had to try Slovenia beer.
All that in 24 hours and I was off for my train to the Croatian coast to catch my overnight ferry to Split to meet Jenny and Courtney.
