Taiwan Part 1: Taipei (June 2014)

My stop in Taiwan was just a short 13 hours.  I really wanted to stay longer, but I’m hoping to make it back to Taiwan as one of my last visits in late August before I return home.  I have some friends, Steph and Joe Welsh that moved to Taiwan about 8 months ago for work, and I was excited to come visit them.  Even though my stopover was quick, they still offered for me to come out to their apartment for dinner and to spend the night which was really nice.  On top of that, Steph came all the way out to the airport to meet me (which was so nice…thank you again).  Steph said my visit was a good test for two things.

1. Uber is new in Taiwan, so she wanted to test out Uber from home to the airport and see how it worked.  So she took Uber X to the airport and found it to be super easy (and this is great as she said they can’t always call the English speaking taxi’s in Taipei.).  I was actually going to order my own Uber back to the airport in the morning, but then realized I turned off my phone and texting so it wouldn’t work.  But pretty cool to know I could use it internationally if I left my texting on.

2. They wanted to go out to dinner with me, but all the babysitters they use were on leave.  So they decided to test their 11.5 year old daughter to stay home with the younger two kids (as the oldest daughter was told she could start babysitting when she was 12).  So it was close in age and Steph and Joe selected a restaurant that was a 5 minute walk in case there was an emergency.

So we were able to go out to a really tasty Chinese dinner and catch up (over a local Taiwan beer of course) and their daughter got to practice babysitting.

Sadly, I had to leave for the airport at 5am to continue my journey, but I’m really glad I had the time to visit and catch up with Steph and Joe and hopefully I’ll be back for a longer visit in August.  As Steph was putting me in a cab this morning (as she still remembers and can speak Chinese and I clearly don’t), I realized I never took any photos of us from the night before and only took the one beer photo.  Silly me…

Heading too to Laos (via Bangkok now)
