I Love Lists 1 (money, currencies, miles traveled)

Here are some random stats I will be keeping about each country on my RTW Trip in 2008-2009:

1. Jamaica (Montego Bay, Ochos Rios)- 5 days/4 nights, local beer is Red Stripe, total cost about $1,100.

2. USA (San Francisco, Walnut Creek, Napa all in California) – 6 days

3. England (London) – 7 days – local beer – any beer at any pub.  Total cost about 200 pounds ($400).  This was only possible as so many friends were so gracious and took me out for lunch, dinners, drinks.  THANK YOU to everyone that helped me stay within my budget when I was here especially Amber and Richard for taking me in for a week.  I really appreciate it!

4. Scotland (Edinburgh, Balerno)- 3 days.  Total cost about 136 pounds or $270 (including transportation 100 pounds (gifts 40 pounds – not included).  THANK YOU to Nic and Stu as staying with you and eating with your family really helped me stay in budget here.  I really appreciate all your hospitality.

(3 repeated) England (London) – 1 night – Total cost 60 pounds ($120).  Had to pay a lot of whatever costs to get by.  Oh well – I was able to stay with Amber and Richard again – Thanks!!!

5. Denmark (Copenhagan, Roskilde, Helsingor) – 5 nights/4 days.   This place was really expensive. Local costs about 2,500 Danish Krona ($530) plus flight of $250.  Total cost was about $780.  Exchange rate 4.9 to the dollar.

6. Sweden (Helsingborg, Kalmar, Oskarshamn, Visby, Stockholm, Uppsala) – 6 nights/7 days.  Very expensive city again.  4,550 Swedish Krona ($770).  Exchange rate 5.91 to the dollar.

7. Finland (Helsinki) – 2 days/nights.  Finland is on the Euro and it was expensive again.  I spent 160 Euros, 460 SEK for ferry so $317.  Exchange rate was 1 euro equals 1.5 dollars.

8. Estonia (Tallinn, Parnu) – 4 nights/5 days.  This was finally a cheaper country (compared to where I`ve been) or what I should call normal prices.  I spent $340 as I used some Euros, Estonia Kroons (EEK).  Exchange rate was 10 EEK to $1.

9. Latvia (Riga, Buska, Rundale, Jurmala) – 3 days/nights.  Felt like normal prices.  I spent 448 Lat or $224.

10. Russia (St. Petersburg, Moscow) – 9 days/8 nights. This was a pretty expensive country – hostels alone were a lot.  I spent 20,194 rubles or $878 .

11. Ukraine (Kiev, Lviv) – 4 nights/6 days  (2 overnight trains) – This was a cheap country but Kiev was twice the price as Lviv for the same food and drink.  Guess the capital can do that.  Kiev was really expensive for me due to the thefts.  I think all in all I lost $900.  My total expenses are excluding that as it`s a sunk cost.  I spent about $485.

12. Hungary (Budapest) – 4 nights/5 days/1 overnight train.  I was able to live pretty cheap here as I had seen so much in November, yet I spent more eating and drinking as I had friends there to enjoy with.  I spent about 58,000 Forints or $385.

13. Poland (Krakow) – 3 days/nights and 1 overnight train.  Prices seemed normal here.  I spent 562 Zlots (sluts as we called them) or $267.

14. Slovakia (Bratislava) / 1 day.  This was a cheaper country and I only was there for a day so my expenses were just the train and food/drinks.  I spent $31.

15. Austria (Vienna) – 3 days/nights.  This was expensive as I was back on the Euro.  I spent 113 Euros or $181.

16. Slovenia (Ljubljana) – 1 day/night and back on the Euro.  I spent 103 Euros or $164.

17. Croatia (Rijeka, Split, Hvar, Brac, Dubrovnik) – 8 days/nights (with overnight ferry).  Staying with Jenny and Courtney in hotels and eating out in nicer places, I knew I would spend more but it was worth it to be with friends. I think I spent about 4,590 Kuna or $1,020 (but I may be leaving some expenses out as it was complex).

18. Italy (Rome, Naples, Capri ) 2 days/3 nights).  I stayed with Giovanni, Laura and Fulvia in Rome for 2 nights and in a hostel in Naples for the others.  Back on the Euro – Italy is expensive…plus the Euro just reached an all time high.  I spent  Euros 332 Euros or $531.

19. Greece (Athens, Mykonos) and Turkey Part 1 (Istanbul, Goreme) – 2 weeks with Colin.  14 days.  This was a more expensive part to my trip as I had to take more flights than normal, the Euro was killing me in Greece, and I wanted to live it up when Colin was here.  That said, he was super great and treated me to a lot of things, so my expenses would have been more, but this was still well over my budget (but worth every penny!).   The Euro increased in value to about 1.6 to the dollar and the New Turkish Lira was stronger than I thought at 1.2 to the dollar.  For these 2 weeks, I spent $2,598.

20. Turkey (Part 2 and 3 – back to a budget again) (Istanbul, Gallipoli, Troy, Selcuk, Ephesus, Pumakkale, Fethiye, Kas, Olympos).  11 days with Milena and we were both really cautious of our money since we are both over budget thanks to Europe`s high prices.   I lost track of money on this part, but I think I spent just over $1,100.

21. Israel (Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Galielee, Bethlehem, Dead Sea) – 6 night/s7 days.  This was an expensive country, but thanks to Nadav, Barak and Haya in Tel Aviv who treated me so well and provided a place for me to stay, I was able to stay within my budget (thanks again!).  I spent $744 (and half of that was my expensive one way flight of $425).

22. Jordan (Petra, Wadi Musa, Aquba) – 2 nights/1 full day.  Jordan was more expensive than Israel.  I spent $173.

23. Egypt (Dahab, Cairo) – 10 days – This was one of the cheapest countries to date.  I spent $700 (including $300 for the scuba course).  Not bad to live off $400 for 10 days!

24. Kenya (Nairobi, Masai Mara, Nakuru, Amboseli).  I was there 10 days, and  I spent $1680 for the safari (part in Tanzania too and one way flight to Zanzibar), $450 to get to Kenya from Egypt and about $300 for spending on safari (including trip to hospital and medicine).  So grand total is roughly $2,400.

25. Tanzania (Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar: Stonestown, Nuwgwi, Kwendra, Prison Island).  I was there for 11 days, and I spent 1,200,000 schillings plus $100 US so about $1,100  (including a $300 flight back to Nairobi)

26.India (Mumbai, Goa, Candolin, Panjim, Keri, Delhi, Jaipur, Agra).  I was here 11days, and I spent 49,899 Indian Rupes or $1,108.

27. Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara). I was there 7 days, and  I spent $800.

28. Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi).  I was there 12 days with two different friends and had a lot of flights.  Overall I spent about $1,450.

29. Cambodia (Phnom Penh and Siem Reap).  I was there 4 days with two flights and spent $450.

30. Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Hanoi).  I was there 12 days (3 flights) and spent  about $1,000.

31. South Korea (Seoul).  I was there 2 days and spent 321,000 Won or $241.  It more expensive as I stayed at a hotel both nights, but being stuck there…I made due.

32. Singapore (Singapore).  I was there 5 night and 529 SGD ($357 US).

33. Hong Kong – I was there 4 nights. I spent $400 in Hong Kong.  So total for $400.

34. Macau – I went for the whole day, but no overnight.  I spent $50 in Macau. (I`m leaving my gambling/entertainment amount out of this figure).  Total spent $50.

35. China (Beijing, Xi`an, Shanghai, Hangzhou).  I spent $1,000 for 11 days (but almost half of this was for flights) as Gina, Ben, Susan, Steph and Joe were so generous and pick up a few tabs here and there and I got to sleep on the floor with Gina and Ben in Beijing, so it really helped me keep my costs down, yet still move around these cities quickly to meet back up and see more.  THANK YOU!

36. Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi).   I spent $689 for 8 days (and half of that was flights)…this can be a really expensive or cheap country depending on what you choose to do.

37. Australia (Margaret River, Dunsbourgh, Yallup, Busselton, Bunbury, Fremantle, Ayers Rock, Alice Springs, Melbourne, Sydney, Airlie Beach).  I was in Australia for 6 weeks or 43 days.  I think I spent $3,360, but I may have missed some expenses.  This comes out to $80 a day including all my flights (which are so expensive in Australia).  There was no way I would have stayed on budget if it wasn`t for the hospitality of Tony, Vanessa and Sam.  Thank you for letting me stay with you and saving some money.  I loved my time in Australia!

2 (again). USA Stopover (California and New York) – I have no idea what I spent here as so much of it was shopping, replacing things and eating out with friends.  I know I spent more than I should have for the 14 days I was in the USA.  Whoops….

38. Argentina (Buenas Aires, Lujan, Mendoza, Maipu, Lujan de Cayo, Uco Valley, Ushuaia, Bariloche, San Martin de los Andes).  My dad was so gracious to treat my brother and me to this trip, so I don´t know the costs for the first 10 days but I was able to pick up a few tabs while he was here.  The total for those few tabs and the two nights on my own was 1,275 pesos ($355).  Colin also met me in Argentina for nine nights and our expenses were  $804 ($89 a day including an expensive flight).

39. Uruguay (Montevideo, Punte de Este and then back on 2nd trip to Colonia).  First 3 days were on my own at Punte de Este and I spend $352 for 4 days ($84 per day).  Second trip was with Colin to Colonia for 2 nights and my costs were $185 ($92 per night) and most of that was the ferry costs.

40. Antarctica – I knew this would be the most expensive part of my trip, but I wanted to and have been saving for a while.  I lucked out and got a last minute cancellation two months prior and was off.  This trip can vary in cost depending on everything, my boat was a simple Russian working boat that caters to active travelers as well and thus was one of the more affordable.  My trip and fuel surcharge was $5,400 plus extra clothes, flights from BA to Ushusia (using web trick for half price fare of $300 R/T), plus rental gear, ship account expenses.  My total expenses for the 12 days was $6,267 or $522 a day.  Most expensive days yet, but beyond worth every penny!

41. Chile expenses (Pucon, Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, Casablanca wine region, Calama, San Pedro de Atacama).  I spent $1,626 for 20 nights (or $81 a night).  This is NOT including Easter Island.

* Easter Island is part of Chile, but since its so different, far away and expensive, I wanted to list the expenses separately.   Easter Island was $1,200 for 6 nights ($200 a night), yet $760 of this was the flight, so we were able to eat, sleep and explore for very little since we cooked most foods.

TOTAL Chile with Easter Island was $2,626 for 26 days (or $108 a day)

42. Bolivia (Overland to Uyuni, La Paz, Copacabana, Isla del Sol).  $560 for 12 days (or $47 a day).  This was one of the most affordable countries to date!

43. Costa Rica – (San Jose, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manual Antonio, Quepos, Santa Elena, Monteverde).  I had one week with Colin, one week with Amanda and spent $1,147 for 15 days ($76 a day).  If I include my outrageous flight from south America (which was $700 one way), then my total for Costa Rica is $1,848.

44. Nicaragua – (San Juan del Sur, Granada, Leon).  I spent $450 for 13 days ($35 a day).  This was a very affordable country.

45. Honduras  – (San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Utila, Puerto Cortes).  I spent $900 for 16 days ($56 a day).  Most of this money was transport and scuba diving as I learned to eat for little on the cheap baleadas and my accommodations were either free or $3 a night.  Not bad for two weeks with a 9 dives as well as my course.

46. Belize – (Dangraia, Tobacco Caye, Caye Caulker) – I spent $850 for 10 days ($85 a day).  Belize was very expensive for everything. Tobacco Caye set me back bout $200 for the 3 nights and all the transport and ferries also added up.

47. Mexico – (Tulum, Akemel, Playa de Carmen) – I spent about $450 in 10 days including a scuba dive ($45 a day).  I’m  not sure exactly on the money as I had to take out more pesos to bring with me to Cuba, but this should be close enough.  Nothing I did was that expensive and this was a very affordable place to stay.

48. Cuba – (Havana, Vinales, Trinidad, Cinefuego, Varadero) – I spent $1,400 in 18 days ($78 a day).  $300 of that was my flight but I would say Cuba is much more expensive than central America.  This was the toughest place for me to deal with finances as I had to really base every decision on costs as once my cash was gone, I couldn’t get more (no ATM or credit card for my US based accounts).  Compared to NY, things were the same or less, but compared to the traveling I have been doing, I found Cuba really expensive as the locals did everything to overcharge the tourists as we are all rich to them.

49. Canada (Waterdown, Niagara Falls, Toronto).  I spent only $300 for the 7 days.  This was completely due to my generous Aunt Sharon and Uncle John as they wouldn’t let me pay for anything.  I think these expenses were only my flight, one bottle of wine for us and ice cream.  I’m so lucky they took such great care of me in Canada.  THANK YOU AGAIN!

50. Japan (Okinawa, Osaka, Himeji, Nara, Miyajima, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Tokyo). I spent $2,495 for 22 days. this is one of the most different accounting for any country for the following reasons. 1. I was lucky to get to stay with Vanessa and Chris for a week (but ended up spending the money I would have on accommodations to do an expensive scuba dive trip). 2. I also was able to use award miles for the main flight to Japan, so that kept my costs down. 3. I was able to stay at the Intercontinental and Crown Plaza hotel for 12 nights for way less due to Vanessa and Chris’s hotel connections (averaged $53 a night…and hostels were between $40-$60 a person…so the fancy hotel made sense at the special rates). So I averaged $113 a day (but this could have been much, much more expensive). THANK YOU so much to Vanessa and Chris for hosting me, treating me and helping me have a wonderful time in Japan! THANK YOU!!!

51. Barbados (Bridgepoint, Needles Point, St. Lawrence Gap, Oisten) I spent $600 dollars for 7 days ($85 a day), but I will say this is not even close to as much money as I should have spent. I have to thank Teresa again for flying me out to Barbados on award miles as that saved me a lot on the plane ticket. Plus Teresa also used her award miles to get us a free hotel at the wonderful 5 star beach front Hilton. So the only expenses I am accounting for her are flight tax, hotel suite upgrade (split with four of us), food, drink, an extra night at a hotel when I missed my flight (on purpose) and way too much fun. Overall…this was such an inexpensive trip. Barbados is an expensive island…but so great and I can’t wait to go back! THANK YOU TERESA!!!

**The Grand Total is for all travels days spent outside of the USA. I decided not to include any of the USA travels or USA stopovers as I really didn’t track this money.   I tracked 456 days traveling and spent a total of $48,607 which averages out to $107 per day.  **
